The exhibition Photographing Ljubljana from the Air came about on the initiative of the public institution Ljubljana Tourism and its then director Barbara Vajda. Initially, the idea was to photograph the city area with an emphasis on Old Ljubljana, but later it was decided to photograph the entire district of the City Municipality of Ljubljana. This is the area from Šmarna gora in the west to Janče in the east, and from Črnuče in the north to Črna vas and the Ljubljana Marshes in the south of the city. This was a sensible decision, as the broader area of Ljubljana includes an exceptionally beautiful and well-ordered rural environment, and the view from the air resulted in extraordinary photographs. The creator of the exhibition, Primož Hieng, photographed the entire area of the City Municipality of Ljubljana in three flights of varying lengths with a helicopter from the Slovenian Police Air Support Unit. At the same time, in cooperation with the helicopter pilots, all of the municipal centres in the Central Slovenian region and their key features were photographed (a total of 26 municipalities). Based on the photographs of the area of the Municipality of Ljubljana, Primož Hieng prepared and published a bilingual book (Slovenian, English): Ljubljana – pogled z neba / A View From the Skies.
Primož Hieng is the author of more than 35 books, including guidebooks, monographs and photo albums. Combining journalistic research and artistic photography, his books often explore Slovenia’s natural and cultural heritage, while his photographs are frequently included in exhibitions exploring Slovenia’s cultural heritage. Primož Hieng is also an explorer of unusual and energy-rich places, including springs and headstreams throughout Slovenia. His works encompass both documentary and artistic photography, allowing visitors to gain a deeper understanding of the Slovenian region and its heritage.
